Awards season di Hollywood masih berlanjut, dan kini giliran penghargaan yang dibagikan oleh asosiasi pekerja visual effects di Amerika Serikat, Visual Effects Society (VES). VES Awards 2015 baru saja mengadakan penganugerahannya yang ke-13 di Los Angeles, AS, 4 Februari kemarin. Untuk tahun ini, film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes menjadi primadona dengan meraih tiga penghargaan di bidang film live action, sementara Hero 6" href="https://layarfilm.com/movie/809/big-hero-6">Big Hero 6 menyapu bersih lima penghargaan di kategori animasi.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes berhasil meraih penghargaan kategori umum, Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Motion Picture (visual efek dalam porsi utama), beserta dua kategori yang lebih spesifik, yaitu Animated Character in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture untuk tokoh Caesar, dan Compositing in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture.

Kemenangan Dawn of the Planet of the Apes pun sedikit banyak mendorongnya jadi unggulan terdepan di Piala Oscar mendatang, khususnya di kategori best Visual Effects. Dalam dari 12 kali penyelenggaraannya, 10 kali pemenang VES Awards di kategori umum juga kemudian meraih Piala Oscar. Kepastian pemenang VES Awards pasti akan menang Oscar memang masih perlu diuji, mengingat penentuan pemenang Piala Oscar dilakukan oleh seluruh anggota Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), termasuk mereka yang tidak bergerak di bidang visual effects.

Mengikuti jejak Dawn of the Planet of the Apes adalah X-Men: Days of Future Past yang meraih dua penghargaan. Dua penghargaan tersebut untuk kategori Virtual Cinematography dan Effects Simulation, berkat adegan aksi tokoh Quicksilver yang memorakporandakan dapur Pentagon di film tersebut.

Sementara di bidang animasi, Hero 6" href="https://layarfilm.com/movie/809/big-hero-6">Big Hero 6 meraih penghargaan kategori umum, Outstanding Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture, ditambah empat kategori yang lebih spesifik. Film ini meraih Animated Character in an Animated Feature, Created Environment in an Animated Feature, Effects Simulations in an Animated Feature, dan Models in any Motion Media Project.

VES adalah sebuah asosiasi yang menaungi sekitar 3000 anggota yang bergerak di bidang visual effects, yang tersebar di bererapa negara. Penentuan nominasi dan pemenang VES Awards pun ditentukan oleh seluruh anggota VES.
